Adoption Day

During the weekend of April 25 and 26th, 2010 the Millerton Veterinary Practice hosted a dog adoption day.  Working with Companion Pet Rescue (CPR) founder, Meredith McGraw and Denise Cohn from Falls Village, CT, the Millerton staff was able to successfully place 30 dogs in loving homes throughout the tri-state area.

Companion Pet Rescue was organized in 2009 and has since then placed over 600 dogs in our area.  Many of these dogs had been neglected, abandoned, and abused and they have found a safe place in Meredith’s care. It is Meredith and Denise’s mission to find homes for all these displaced dogs so that euthanasia does not occur.

Meredith drives from Georgia with sometimes up to 50 dogs at a time.  Arriving in her big bus, she comes to the area several times per year from mid-April through October, together Meredith and Denise have been extremely successful in placing many unwanted dogs.

The Millerton Veterinary Practice decided to sponsor the location for the first event of the season.  They recognized the population in and around the Millerton, NY area were not privy to the dog adoption efforts in Falls Village last year.  Together, Dr. Cannon and her staff organized the adopted dogs to receive a complimentary exam and microchip before they left for their new homes.  Chris Tompkins, Jennifer Lowe (Sand Road Groomer), and Amanda Hohman (Sand Road Kennel Coordinator) also volunteered their services by providing free baths to all the dogs that were to be adopted that day.

The dogs that were not fortunate to find homes on this day were fostered by local families until the next adoption weekend in May.  Many of the Millerton employees did their part too, and fostered a dog or two for the time between adoption events.  Those dogs that did not go to foster families that day made the long trek back to Georgia with Meredith only to return in May for another chance at being adopted by a loving family. All dogs under Meredith’s care will return to the area in hopes of eventually finding a home.
